GREEK WEEK: HUPERETES
By: Pastor Matt Morgan with Pastor Keith Stagge
Huperetes (pronounced hoop-ay-ret'-ace): “under rowers”
This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. (1 Corinthians 4:1 NIV)
Paul’s describes himself as a slave rowing in the bottom of a ship. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reprimands scribes and Pharisees for desiring chief seats and elevated status. The apostle Paul used titles such as “apostle,” prisoner of Christ,” and “bondservant” to describe himself because he wanted readers to understand that his ultimate duty was to His Master Jesus Christ.
Paul humbled himself through his self-prescribed title as a servant, an under rower. The Corinthians were familiar with the duties of an under rower, as they lived near a major Roman port city. The apostle Paul declares that his description is the man at the bottom of the ship. Here we have a declared status that we must maintain. In your prayer today, ask God if you too, could be the lowest that rows the hardest.
