GREEK WEEK: SUBMISSION
By: Pastor Matt Morgan
Hupotasso (pronounced hoop-ot-as'-so): “to rank under, to become compliant and subservient”
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7 KJV)
“And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’” (James 4:6 NLT)
Hupotasso is a military word. It means to arrange yourself under. Submission has to do with protocol and resigning of our own will, submitting to the will of another. Submission is obedient and respectful. It is not casual or optional. My son Nathan, who is in the army, has had to stay at many Air Force bases. He say it makes him nervous, because he isn’t familiar with their rank and wants to be respectful. If serving is beneath you, leadership is beyond you!
To submit is to stand down and relinquish all rights to the one you’re in submission to. Ironically, when we submit to God we do not find bondage; we find freedom and liberty. Pride repels God, while humility attracts God.
“We will never be able to be over the things under us, until we are under the things over us.” (Adrian Rogers)
