GREEK WEEK: TIME
By: Pastor Matt Morgan with Pastor Keith Stagge
Kairos (pronounced kahee-ros'): “time, season”
“They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you." (Luke 19:44 KJV)
“My times are in your hands...” (Psalm 31:15a KJV)
The ancient Greeks had two words for time, chronos and kairos. Chronos refers to chronological or sequential time, while kairos refers to the proper or set time of an event. The classic example for chronos time is our watch which tells time by chronological order—it emphasizes a duration of time.
A kairos moment is an opportune time for action—it emphasizes the right, critical, opportune moment. It also has a strong reference towards the weather. You can see where this is going. Just as the weather is continually changing, there are seasons of blessings and opportunities coming over the horizon that can change everything instantly. The kairos moment requires decisive action.
Kairos is not static, its dynamic. It involves movement and response. Whether it’s a “fitting time” or “season” or just a divine opportunity, we must be receptive to kairos moments. “Times” should be more than endured, they should be expected!
