THE LAST OF THE HARVEST

By: Tim & Cheri Henderson

But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:8-9 NKJV

Every year, Tim and I plant a vegetable garden that always includes tomatoes and green beans. Recently on a late September morning, we went out to gather some of the many tomatoes that were still flourishing, and noticed just a few green beans hanging from withered, yellowed leaves. The last of the harvest ... hardly worth the effort, but we just couldn’t pass them by.

A few minutes later as we stood at the kitchen sink, washing away the garden grime from just a handful of green beans, the Holy Spirit spoke. There will soon come a day when it will be the last of the harvest, and because we don’t know the day or the hour when Jesus will return, we will not realize we’re looking upon the last few. Oblivious to the fact His return could be only five minutes away, we may be standing before a lost waitress, a postal clerk, a co-worker who will be left to wither on the vine without our intervention. We need to be seeing everyone we encounter as potentially "the last of the harvest" and share the good news of Jesus Christ. Bring them in and let them be washed in the precious, cleansing blood of Jesus Christ.
