THE DEFENSIVE
By: Pastor Brian Huff
My son, do not despise the chastening of Jehovah; nor be weary of His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects, even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.
Proverbs 3:11-12 MKJV
I think I can relate with others when I say, “I HATE BEING WRONG!!” I hate the idea that what I have decided to be factual in my life is not actually fact at all. I guess what I really want to say is that I want every decision I make to be one I can defend at all cost. I want to be able to fight for the decisions I have made because they were perfect.
The problem is that I often make decisions based on the moment. Recognizing this truth is often one of the hardest things to do as a father, mother, friend, Christian, co-worker, boss.… So, I defend at all cost. What I have realized is that when I am defensive, I will find the “rightness” in my wrong. I will also ignore all my arrogance and wrong, to defend this tiny little part that’s right.
Today, I pray that God helps us see how defensive we have become. I pray that He will help us lower the defensive walls we have built between ourselves and His truth, and that we accept His correction as love and not anger.
