STRENGTH

By: Sarah Pennington

O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Psalms 8:1-4 KJV

While reading this very familiar Psalm, verse two stood out boldly to me. It didn’t seem to make sense. Sometimes I think I skim over verses like this one because the first verse is so familiar, I never really digested verse two.

Do you talk and question the Lord while reading the Bible? I do. When I read this, I thought, “Lord, there is NOTHING strong about a baby.” I read it again. Again I thought, “Nope, babies are not strong. A nursing baby? Still not strong. I know You’ve also said they have perfect praise...? Is that what this is referring to? What am I missing here?” Then I read it again.

That’s when I paid attention and saw “out of the mouth” really stand out to me. Think out about it: out of the mouth. OUT OF THE MOUTH. OUT... OF... THE... MOUTH! It’s what we speak forth that has strength, and that is not our own strength, but strength He himself has ordained.

What happens when a baby cries? SOMEONE COMES RUNNING! A crying baby causes a reflex in a nursing mother. A baby’s cry will raise blood pressure, turn heads, and attract attention. Have you ever had seen a child come to their parent to ask permission to do something, and you can tell they don’t think that parent will let them do whatever they’re asking? The child usually will shuffle their feet, talk softly, and mumble. The parent has to say, “You want what? To go where? With whom? Open up your mouth and say it!”

I submit to you today to cry out to the Lord, and know He hears you. OPEN UP YOUR MOUTH and let the praise come forth, the intercessions, the groanings, the prayers and supplications, the petitions. The strength that you need comes from Him!
