REMEMBER LOT'S WIFE

By: Pam Gray

As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "UP! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city! … Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills”... but Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way...

Philippians 3: 13-15 ESV

When I read chapter 19 of Genesis, it amazes me that God made a way of escape for Lot and his family, but Lot still bargained with the angels on his way of escape. The Angel said to “flee to the mountain” and Lot said, “I can’t make it there. Can I flee to the small city that is close?” The angels agreed and said, “Hasten to the city called Zoar.” But, even in light of special accommodation for Lot’s wishes, his wife looked back—to her old way of life; her old friends; her old loves; her old hates. Even when the way of escape had been made, she could not let go of the old, even though it meant death: death to a new life, new friends, new loves, new forgiveness.

Don’t look back when your way of escape has been made. As Paul says, forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead. Remember Lot’s wife!
