RECIPE FOR LIFE

By: Jennifer Nystrom

Whoever heeds discipline heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

Proverbs 10:17 NIV

I love to bake. But as all bakers know, baking comes with some pretty strict rules. It is a lot of chemistry and science, and the slightest alteration can affect the outcome drastically.
I was trying out a new cookie recipe and decided I knew better than the person who’d spent hours and hours developing the recipe as to how it should be made. I chose to add some ingredients when they weren’t called for and to skip the very crucial step of chilling the dough. Needless to say, the cookies were a total failure.

If I had followed the directions and made the cookies as directed, they would probably have turned out great. But I chose to do my own thing and not follow the directions, which led to failure.

Likewise, we have been given discipline or instruction from God through his Word. Yet, how often do we think we know better and go off and do our own thing? This not only hurts ourselves, but in many cases can take those around us down the wrong path. Trust the author of the recipe for our life! He knows best!
