MARVEL

By: Pam Gray

The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof; but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Matthew 8:8-10 KJV

And when the Sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? And what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judas, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief.

Mark 6: 2-6 KJV

Marvel: to be filled with wonder or astonishment. Twice in the Bible it is said that Jesus marveled: once at a centurion’s (an unbeliever) complete faith in his power and authority; another time, at the offense and unbelief those closest to him. Talk about speaking volumes.

We long to see a mighty move of God, yet have we the church, his family, become so familiar with Jesus that we no longer expect or believe that Jesus can do all that he promised. Have we placed him in a box? Have we limited his mighty works by our unbelief?

Marvel! Jesus will marvel at us as individuals and as his church. Will it be because of our great faith or the lack thereof? Let us strive to have Jesus marvel at us because of our complete trust and faith in his power and authority.
