TO HONOR OR TO HONOR

By: Jill Collins

Show respect for all men (treat them honorably). Love the brotherhood (the Christian fraternity of which Christ is the Head). Reverence God. Honor the emperor.

1 Peter 2:17 AMP

Honor is mentioned some 147 times throughout the bible. To honor is defined as “to value, to prize or to give weight to something.” David honored King Saul even though he knew that the king wanted him dead. Jesus honored Judas by washing his feet, knowing a few hours later he would betray him. It’s easy to show honor to people who act and think like you, but what about when you get pulled over or an authority figure in your life doesn’t do what you think they should be doing...?

Honor isn’t a choice, it’s a command by God. One of His top 10 (commandments) says to “Honor your mother and father.” In this culture, how can we grow in honor? Romans 12:10 (ESV) says, “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” Outdo one another! This means honor one another even if you feel like they don’t deserve it. By honoring those that are difficult to honor, you also show honor to God.
