SLEEP WELL
By: Pastor Brian Huff
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Proverbs 3:24 NIV
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 NIV
I’ve heard many prayer requests about sleepless nights; people have asked me to pray that God will help them sleep all through the night. Many people take medication to help them override the thoughts that keep them awake and to help keep them asleep until morning. Even as I’m writing this, I just received a text from someone who is concerned because for the past few months she wakes up at 4 AM and cannot go back to sleep.
Sleeplessness is unhealthy for both the spiritual and physical parts of your being. This should force us to ask a few questions about why we struggle sleeping.
Worry is often the number one reason that most people have trouble sleeping. If that is the cause of your sleeplessness, prayer and confession is the best remedy. Worry won’t change the issue or bring resolution to the things you’re worrying about any faster. Right now, I am praying peace over your mind. Rest in knowing that after you have done your part to bring resolution, God WILL then do His part.
Sometimes sleeplessness is spiritual. In those instances, it may be God bringing you to spiritual war. If that’s the case, turning on the television, getting on social media, or just pondering your thoughts will not bring resolution. I tell our FOP Youth students, if you can’t fall asleep then pray or read the Word of God. Make the devil pay for interfering with your rest! Make him upset that you’re awake! To win the spiritual war against sleeplessness, you have to war spiritually!
God, forgive us for all the mistakes we have made today. Help us forgive all the ones who have hurt us or offended us. God, help our minds to be at peace, and our sleep to be sweet. When we wake up in the morning help us to be rejuvenated, and motivated to do the things you have called us to do. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
