DO AS I DO
By: Jennifer Nystrom
A new command I give to you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
John 13:34-35 NIV
How many times have you heard a person in authority say, “Don’t do as I do, do as I say?” Or perhaps you have said these words yourself! But we all know the best teacher will model what they want their students to do. We learn so much better by watching someone’s example rather than listening to their lecture.
This was Jesus. He told his disciples to treat and love other people just as He did. Best of all, if they did, others would know that they were His disciples because He treated everyone with love. Jesus would never ask us to do anything that He wasn’t already doing or had already done. He treated everyone He met, no matter who they were or their status in life, with the same love and respect.
There are many people who are easy to love, but there are many more who aren’t. These are the people we need to focus on and show them the true love of Christ. Go out of your way to say a kind word or do a kind deed.
Instead of saying, “Don’t do as I do, do as I say,” when it comes to loving others, let your mantra be “Do as I do!” Let’s show the world whose disciple we are.
