SPRINKLES

By: Elle Buell

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Matthew 6:31-34 NIV

A girl walked into a cupcake shop looking for a sweet treat. She went to the counter and saw all the beautiful cupcakes behind the glass. She chose her favorite double chocolate cupcake and asked the worker for extra strawberry icing on top. As the worker boxed up her cupcake, he casually asked, “Would you like sprinkles on top as well?” The man rattled off a dozen or so sprinkle flavors and waited for her selection. She was panicked with the choice. Would the cookies-n-cream sprinkles taste better than the rainbow sprinkles? Maybe the chocolate sprinkles would be the best match with her double chocolate cupcake...? Would the strawberry sprinkles be fewer calories or would the blueberry sprinkles give her a stomachache?

She was obviously anxious and struggling to make her decision when the worker behind the counter suddenly said, “I’m sorry, ma’am. I just remembered we’re all out of sprinkles today!” She cashed out and picked up her cupcake from the counter, but as she was walking out, she saw several jars of sprinkles behind the counter. She stopped and exclaimed to the worker, “You aren't out of sprinkles! I can see them behind the counter. Why did you say you were out of them?” With a gentle smile, the worker casually replied, “Sprinkles are just extra. They’re meant to be fun. If sprinkles stress you out, then they aren’t worth it.”

Sometimes, we get caught up in the “sprinkles” and let them stress us out, make us nervous and full of anxiety. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6 to “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these [sprinkles] will be given to you as well.” I challenge you to take a moment today and think about the “extras” in your life—sports, clubs, TV, video games, hobbies, friendships, etc. Are you letting these things stress you out or distract you from your trust in God? Focus today on not “sweating the small stuff” and instead entrusting everything that worries you to His care.
