GUARD YOUR MIND PT. 2
By: Whitney Northern
My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you-I, whom you have redeemed.
Psalm 71:23 NIV
“If it costs you your peace, it costs too much.” (Anonymous)
I don’t think it’s a surprise that I want to live in spiritual peace, as I think everyone strives to do. It’s exactly what God wants for us, too. Guarding our minds and hearts is just as important when we’re listening to and singing songs. What do the words, catchy as they may be, actually say? What are we declaring over our lives? What are we declaring over others?
Proverbs 18:21 tells us that our tongue has the power of life and death, and that means that, even in music, we are doing something in the spiritual. When I think about it, it doesn’t impress me when my kids can sing a song word-for-word from their favorite princess movie but have them sing a worship song under their breath as they play, and I’m instantly fighting tears. Think about the difference God must feel when we use our voices to sing something that doesn’t glorify Him and compare it to what you know He feels when we choose to worship instead.
“We must never rest until everything inside us worships God.” (A.W. Tozer)
