WAITING

By: Elle Buell

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”  When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”  “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” (Exodus 3:1-5 NIV)

On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai. After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.’” (Exodus 19:1-4 NIV)

God revealed this combination of scripture to me when I was in a desperate time of “waiting on God.” He led me to this scripture in Exodus 3 when Moses encountered the burning bush and God said to take off his sandals because that ground was holy. In other words, God’s saying to Moses, “Wait right here! This place that you’re at right now is holy.”

There is holiness in waiting on God. If you’re waiting on God for answers, direction, clarity, wisdom, release, or healing, I want you to know that this place you’re in right now is HOLY GROUND. Stay in the Word while you wait. Be diligent in prayer while you wait. Draw nearer and nearer to Him while you wait. There is holiness in the waiting.

Mount Horeb and Mount Sinai are the same mountain, so these two passages are an encounter between God and Moses on the very same mountain. However, in Exodus 19 God instructs Moses to go remind the Israelites that He is faithful, He has brought them out of bondage, and He is a Promise Keeper. In other words, God is saying is, “See how I kept you? See how I brought you out? I'm a full-circle God and I’m bringing you back to the beginning where I started this work, just so you can see how faithful I’ve been for you.”

If you’re in a place of waiting, remember that God is faithful. Let me say it a little louder for the people in the back: GOD IS FAITHFUL! He will bring you out. He will lift you up. He will see you through. He will provide for you, He will protect you, and He will bless you. Be encouraged that there is holiness in your waiting and KNOW that God is moving in ways you probably can’t see. Your waiting is not for nothing. God is faithful—even though you’re still in your Exodus 3 place, He is working on your Exodus 19.
