YOU CAN LEAD A DEER TO WATER
By: Micaiah Wesler
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
Psalm 42:1-2 NIV
As the saying goes, “You can lead a deer to water but you can’t make him stay there.” Such a beautiful and agonizing scripture from David! He is in a tough spot and He needs God! David is saying that we are like the deer and God is like the water. It’s a beautiful image but there is one glaring thing that sticks out to me every time: Why is he so thirsty? If God was the water then why have we allowed ourselves to get so thirsty? The water hasn’t moved. It’s in the same stream as it always was.
All too commonly we move away from the water and then, when we find ourselves in trouble, we suddenly realize how thirsty we truly are. If we had stayed next to the stream, we could have drunk anytime we wanted.
Sometimes we get in situations where we wonder, “Where is God?!” But sometimes the question is better put, “Where are we?” God’s intention is to lead us by still waters (Psalm 23:2) so that we never thirst again. If you are feeling spiritually dry then let God lead you back to Himself today and this time, don’t meander too far!
