THE QUILT
By: Jennifer Nystrom
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV
There is so much beauty in a quilt, and not necessarily the obvious beauty. Take a good look at a quilt and you will see a collection of many different pieces of fabric—different shapes, different colors, all woven together to make a beautiful, useful piece of art.
Many utilitarian quilts have been made out of scraps of fabric from tired and worn clothing and/or scraps of fabric from other projects not big enough to be useful on their own. Yet, after careful cutting, measuring, and stitching together, you have a creation worthy of a place of honor in your home.
How like a quilt is our life in Christ! Our lives are made up of discarded scraps. On their own they are torn and broken and nothing of beauty. But Christ gives us new life. He takes all these scraps, mends them, and cuts them into perfect shapes. Then He knits and weaves all of our brokenness together into a beautiful quilt of brand new life in him.
Many times, while Christ is “stitching” us together, we can’t see the pattern He is carefully and lovingly putting into place. It isn’t until that last seam is sewn that we realize the great work He is doing in our life. As a master quilter needs patience to piece together her work of art, we need to have patience as Christ is continually working in us and through us for our entire life. When He is finished, we don’t resemble anything of our old self, just as a quilt doesn’t resemble any of the old fabrics it is made from. We are completely new, completely beautiful in Christ.
